Are you absorbing your vitamins and nutrients?

Anyone who takes supplements for vitamins and nutrients sometimes wonders if these are being absorbed at all or "going right down the toilet."

I did a search to find about how the body absorbs nutrients and what one must do to make sure that his money isn't going "down the drain."

Since I have a lot of money tied up in vitamins, nutrients and minerals in the form of supplements, the past two days I have been intensely searching for ways in which to better absorb these supplements. From what I have recently discovered, the supplements are attacked by the acids in our stomach and are mostly neutralized or destroyed. In other words, the money spent on these supplements is literally going down the drain.

I have found two ways in which to have the supplements be absorbed better by our digestive systems. One is to find supplements of vitamins and nutrients that are Enteric Coated which all the supplements to withstand the attack by the acids in the stomach and pass intact into the intestines where they eventually dissolve and are incorporated into our systems.

The other way is to make sure we get the proper healthy fats, which then help the essential vitamins like A, Bs, C, K & E get into our system. While I now feel that the Enteric Coated tablets is the best way to go in which to get the highest percentage of the supplement into our system, using a healthy fat, such as Omega 3 fish oil, may be the best alternative until I can find a reasonably priced vitamin or nutrient which has the Enteric Coated cover.

I found that there are healthy fats that are important in the absorbing of vitamins and nutrients. Here is an article written by Mike Adams of Natural News about the subject...

Dietary fat is necessary for absorption of vitamins, nutrients and phytochemicals from fruits and vegetables

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

A fascinating new study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that dietary fat is necessary for the absorption of nutrients from fruits and vegetables. In the study, people who consumed salads with fat-free salad dressing absorbed far less of the helpful phytonutrients and vitamins from spinach, lettuce, tomatoes and carrots than those who consumed their salads with a salad dressing containing fat. This is interesting research, but not necessarily all that surprising. We've known for a long time that healthy fats are a critical part of a healthy diet, and that avoiding fats actually causes chronic disease. The key is in choosing the right kind of fats for your diet and making sure you don't overdo the fats, because fats have a very high caloric density and can add far more calories to your meal than you might expect.

Here's another article about how healthy fats are essential, not only for the absorbing of our vitamins, but to help maintain our health...

What are the different types of healthy fats and oils?

Fats and oils are made up of basic units called fatty acids. Each type of fat or oil is a mixture of different fatty acids. Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) are found mainly in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, olives and avocadoes. They are liquid at room temperature.

Statin drugs cause more harm than good

No matter how much I complain to my doctor, he still wants me to stick with statins and possibly go to a stronger one! He wants me to get my cholestrol down to around 150, but from what I read, the whole cholestrol thing is just hyped up by the medical profession. My older brother had muscle damage to his legs because of taking statins so long. Now he can't walk too far or play golf. A friend of mine ended up in the hosptial with intense pains because of taking statins.

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, has more disturbing news about statins and their side effects that are worse than the benefits of using them...

Big Pharma lies about statin drugs finally exposed in British Medical Journal

To hear Big Pharma tell it, statin drugs are "miracle" medicines that have prevented millions of heart attacks and strokes. But a recent study published in the British Medical Journal tells a completely different story: For every heart attack prevented by the drug, two or more people suffered liver damage, kidney failure, cataracts or extreme muscle weakness as a result of taking the drug. Statin drugs, in other words, harm far more people than they help.

The path to true health is in your hands!

It all started with Stevia! I wanted to find a more healthy alternative to sugar and/or the chemically toxic sugar substitutes offered at your local grocery store. My search on the Internet led to stevia and all the benefits it had over sugar or any other sugar replacement. It also had additional health benefits of being good for your gums and helping protect against teeth decay.

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the Internet turned into my second and third opinion and option. I found there were many different paths one could take to defeat this enemy and one didn't have to use the three main options of orthodox treatment: surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. From what I have found out, there is only a 3% chance of complete recovery using these methods. I also have learned that there is a cure for most every disease in nature. You just have to search hard enough and you will find it.

Nature doesn't have "profit" as the bottom line. The medical and pharmaceutical industries are geared to keeping their gold mines intact and protecting their bottom line: profit!!

While a lot of people may not believe in psychic power and other dealings with the paranormal, I used to do a lot of reading on the "Sleeping Prophet" Edgar Cayce. He used to do "readings" for people on all sorts of topics. The most common reoccurring theme was health and finding cures in nature. Cayce was able to find a lot of cures that people even use now days in alternative health care.

To me there are two main truths in life: You are what you eat, and the truth is out there.

One of the biggest reasons for the rise in cancer and other deadly diseases is what we put into our mouths. In this modern era of "eating on the go" and the other time constraints, we have given up the job of preparing healthy meals to others. The "others" are poisoning the food that we eat. From chemical sprays to food additives for long shelf life, the chemicals we digest that are incorporated in our foods are killing us slowly. It's like taking a small dose of arsenic every day. You can't taste it and it doesn't have an immediate effect, but someday it WILL kill you!

Steveia wasn't the first alternative choice I made in finding a new path to health. Over 15 years ago, I had started using niacin to help reduce my high cholesterol. It helped for a while, but my cholesterol gradually crept up again and my doctor put me on statins. One of the problems with niacin was the flushing experience I had with it. Eventually, I found a time-released brand and used that, but over the years, the product I used wasn't on the shelf any more. I have found a new non-flush niacin that doesn't give me any flushing, so hopefully, I can get off the statins that have given so many bad side effects.

This past year I have probably learned more about how to cleanse the body from causes of diseases than what most doctors ever learn. The few doctors who know about the real cause and effect of eating and nutrition will not preach to their patients about the way to perfect health is through a complete change in their eating habits. Such advice could lead to them losing their licenses. If a doctor is diagnosed with cancer, he most likely will not follow his own advice for his treatment. He will most likely find an alternative treatment that will have a much better chance of truly healing him.

I will have much more to say about this topic in the future, but wanted to start off this chapter showing that there are alternative paths to REAL health than what the orthodox medical industry tells you. You can take whatever path you want, but you owe it to yourself and the ones who love and depend on you that you weigh every option available to you, alternative or orthodox.

Dandelions a miracle cure?

Eating a dandelion is very healthy and nutritious.

"What?? You want me to eat a weed?"

That must be the first reaction that most people would have if they read the title of this tread. Eating a weed???

I have heard of making dandelion wine, a friend used to do that. And I may have heard about possibly having dandelion greens in a salad. But never did I realize how healthy eating dandelions, from flower to the root, can be very beneficial to one's health.I read in a health newsletter about how eating dandelion greens could help kidney stones:

Dandelion is most commonly used as a liver and kidney "tonic" to dissolve stones and increse bile flow. It is also employed as a diuretic to reduce water retention and to stimulate appetite. The root and leaves can be eaten in salads or as a cooked green.

That made me curious as I have a lawn full of dandelions just waiting to be sprayed with weed killer. I went out and picked a leaf and muched on it. It was pretty bitter. But I went ahead and harvested some and had them with my salad. No, I didn't die. LOLAnyway, I did some research on eating dandelions and found out the best time to harvest them is in the early spring BEFORE the flowers come out. That's like stevia. Once the flower blossoms, the leaf is much more bitter. One interesting fact I leared is that the dandelion has more vitamin A and C than most foods. It also has calcium, so this is definitey a healthy food to eat. And who'd have thunk that??

I usually don't post entire articles, but this one is worth putting here in its entirety...

The dandelion is a healthful, great tasting weed you can eat

By Carol Williams Want to eat a weed? One that’s easy to find and tastes great? Just start hunting for those first spring dandelions.

The dandelion’s true name is Taraxacum Officinale, which means “the official remedy for disorders.”

Legend has it that the people of Atlantis used the dandelion as a food and a tonic. The early colonists brought the dandelion to America from Europe. They used all parts of the plant, even the roots, which they roasted and ground for a coffee-like drink. We know that frontier healers often recommended dandelion greens as a spring tonic. They are full of vitamins unavailable to pioneers during the winter. There is no doubt dandelions have saved lives.

Our name for the weed comes from the French Dent de Lion, meaning “lion’s tooth.” This refers to the jagged points on the leaves, which look like sharp teeth. The French grow dandelions to eat, just as we grow lettuce in our gardens.

Modern science has analyzed dandelion greens. They are a good source of calcium, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. They have twice as much vitamin A in a one-cup serving than most vitamin pills. They also have as much calcium as a children’s vitamin or half a glass of milk. That’s more than most other vegetables. Without vitamin A, people have eye problems and have trouble fighting infections. Vitamin A helps kids grow tall and keeps skin healthy. Calcium keeps bones strong and growing and nerves working right. Your parents might have heard of eating dandelions, but even your grandparents might not know how to prepare them.

The first steps are knowing when and where to gather the tasty greens. Dandelions are best picked where the grass grows tall and free. Yard dandelions, which have been cut often, do not have as good a flavor. Also, many people try to poison the dandelions in their yards, and those chemicals are not healthy to eat.

The best time to gather is long before the last frost of spring. The first edible portion appears as a slightly reddish tangle of leaves. The greens grow from these. Dandelion greens are the leaves above the surface. They must be gathered before the plant blooms to be delicious. The best time to gather them is just when the bloom bud appears, before the stalk grows. If you wait too long, they will taste bitter. Eating the leaves after the yellow flowers bloom is like chewing yesterday’s gum.

To cook dandelion greens, wash them well with water, then place them in a pan and pour boiling water over them. Let them boil for five minutes, then season with salt and butter. Eat them hot. If the taste is too strong, gather the bloom buds and cook them with the leaves to smooth out the taste. This spring, cook up a batch of nutritious, delicious greens for dinner. And you may want to invite your grandma . . . it could bring back some memories for her.

Big Pharm & FDA's war on Alternative remedies

Money rules in the United States. If you have enough, you can buy enough clout to control what people read and think. Big Pharm has the money to buy lobbyists in Washington and to influence Congress members. Because of the huge money in pharmaceuticals, the people in power are bought by Big Pharm and Big Med to make laws that help their industries at the expense of the common people who just want to be healthy and be cured of diseases.

Alternative remedies proves to be a threat to Big Pharm and Big Med as these are multi-billion dollar industries that thrive on the sickness of people, not their wellness. Now the AP is going on the warpath to attack any and all alternative medicine, trying to discredit those approaches and brainwashing people.

Associated Press declares war on alternative medicine

by: Mike Adams
NaturalNews Editor
Saturday, November 07, 2009

(NaturalNews) The Associated Press has declared war on alternative medicine, publishing a series of stories attacking everything from nutritional therapies to bioidentical hormones. These stories, which are syndicated across thousands of websites around the world, are prefaced with the following highly-opinionated "Editor's Note":

EDITOR'S NOTE: Ten years and $2.5 billion in research have found no cures from alternative medicine. Yet these mostly unproven treatments are now mainstream and used by more than a third of all Americans. This is one in an occasional series examining their use and potential risks. What this note reveals is an extraordinary bias against natural medicine from the start. It's clear from the claim of "examining their use and potential risks" that the Associated Press isn't even looking for potential benefits of natural medicine. They're just looking to discredit it. And the part about "Ten years and $2.5 billion in research have found no cures" is factually incorrect.

Natural cures for prostate cancer

Ever since I was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer over a year ago, I have been doing a lot of research for natural cures. With the magic of Google, I was able to find tons of information about how to treat cancer naturally, without going through the barbaric procedures of "modern medicine" which have proven to not be as successful as the althernate and natural methods.

I have found that taking vitamins and supplements like vitamin E, D3, C, Omega 3 fish oil, Kyolic garlic extract, turmeric, saw palmetto, New Chapter's Prostate 5LX, New Chapter's Zyflamend, zinc, L-Lysine essential ammino acids, selenium and my regular One-A-Day vitamin have reduced my PSA blood work. It went from 5.6 to 4.5 in just one month of taking these supplements.

There was also another ingredient, Paw Paw, which is supposed to target and kill cancer cells. I took Paw Paw for one month and hopefully it did do as advertised. Here's a link to information on Paw Paw...

http://alternativecancer.us/pawpaw.htm

I have now learned on Mike Adam's Natural News web site that eating walnuts is also supposed to help reduce the prostate cancer (and probably others too). This is yet more proof that nature has cures for many diseases, if not all of them. This is an amazing story of a perfect natural medicine...

Scientists find walnuts fight prostate cancer

by: S. L. Baker, features writer
Thursday, April 15, 2010

(NaturalNews) Walnuts are a rich plant source of omega-3s, the fatty acids also found in cold water fish like salmon. Omega-3s are known to lower the risk of a host of health problems from depression to heart disease. Walnuts are also loaded with gamma tocopherol (a form of vitamin E), phytochemicals known as polyphenols, and antioxidants. Now, for the first time, scientists have reported that these nutrient-rich nuts have the ability to reduce the size and growth of prostate cancer.

Scientists from the University of California-Davis just reported their discovery at the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), being held in San Francisco this week. "Walnuts should be part of a prostate-healthy diet," Paul Davis, Ph.D., who headed the study, said in a statement to the media. "They should be part of a balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables."

Debate: Natural vitamin C vs ascorbic acid

The Natural vitamin C vs ascorbic acid debate has a long history. You listen to one side and you will be convinced that one is telling the truth.I have long heard that ascorbic acid is not the pure vitamin C. In fact, my recent readings has suggested that it is the shell of the whole vitamin C and the lack of the main ingredients will leach those in the body out. This is on the side of ascorbic acid being the exact same as the natural kind...

Synthetic Vitamin C Versus "Natural" Vitamin C

It is possible to find vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in many different forms with any number of claims regarding its efficacy or bioavailability. Bioavailability refers to the degree to which a nutrient becomes available to the target tissue after it has been administered. Our conclusions about the various forms of vitamin C based on the available scientific evidence follow. More information and references are posted on the LPI Micronutrient Information Center.

• Natural vs. synthetic ascorbic acid: Natural and synthetic ascorbic acid are chemically identical. As assessed by at least two studies, there appears to be no clinically significant difference in the bioavailability and bioactivity of natural ascorbic acid and synthetic ascorbic acid.

• Different forms of ascorbic acid (powders, tablets, etc.): The gastrointestinal absorption of ascorbic acid occurs through an active transport process, as well as through passive diffusion. At low gastrointestinal concentrations of ascorbic acid active transport predominates, while at high gastrointestinal concentrations active transport becomes saturated, leaving only passive diffusion. In theory, slowing down the rate of gastric emptying (e.g. by taking ascorbic acid with food or taking a slow-release form of ascorbic acid) should increase its absorption. The bioavailability of ascorbic acid appears equivalent whether it is in the form of powder, chewable tablets, or non-chewable tablets. Moreover, bioavailability of ascorbic acid from slow-release preparations has not been found to be greater than that of plain ascorbic acid.

• Mineral ascorbates: Mineral salts of ascorbic acid (mineral ascorbates) are buffered and therefore less acidic. Thus, mineral ascorbates are often recommended to people who experience gastrointestinal problems (abdominal pain or diarrhea) with plain ascorbic acid. There appears to be little scientific research to support or refute the claim that mineral ascorbates are less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. When mineral salts of ascorbic acid are taken, both the ascorbic acid and the mineral appear to be well-absorbed, so it is important to take into consideration the dose of the mineral accompanying the ascorbic acid when taking large doses of mineral ascorbates.
